UGANDAN COFFEE STOLEN ON KENYAN ROAD WHILE IN TRANSIT TO MOMBASA PORT STILL UNSOLVED ISSUE.
The Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) and uganda coffee exporters have been unable to fully benefit from the high demand of Ugandan coffee stolen for being organic and its rich aroma, for many years have suffered heavy losses to millions of dollars as a result of coffee stolen while in transit to Mombasa port.
The theft typically occurs during transit, mostly when Kenyan transporters/companies transporting coffee ., Once they cross past ugandan border, its were the syndicate starts, the trucks carrying coffee are diverted to Kenyan ware houses, off loaded and at the same time reloaded with bags of sand to the port.
The Uganda government and the coffee industry stake holders have been working to address this issue.
This is a common issue that has long plagued the ugandan coffee industry. The theft of Ugandan coffee along the transportation routes to Mombasa port is a significant problem that has resulted in substantial financial losses for coffee exporters in Uganda.
The long journey and poor road conditions make it easy for thieves to intercept and steal the coffee before it reaches Mombasa port.
Addressing such issues the Ugandan government ,coffee stake holders and the industry should establish more stable export mechanisms, in a way this will minise the loop holes hence boosting their profits.Hence forth a win win for both the government and the exporters.
Due to the high demand of Ugandan coffee in the international markets , Ugandan government should revise security measures along the transportation routes in kenya.
Measures such as increased police surveillance along the transportation routes, improved road conditions , and better tracking and tracing systems for coffee shipment. While progress has been made there is still alot more to be done to fully secure Ugandan coffee exports.
Also, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) should put in place stringent measures to Kenya transporter/companies, which have continued to syndicate and steal Uganda’s coffee .Bilateral trade laws should also be reviewed to restraint the current trend of theft.
