Rev. Can. Moses Banja Enthroned as the new Namirembe Bishop on 6th  2023

New Namirembe Bishop Moses Banja.

Rt. Rev. Canon Moses Banja has been enthroned as the sixth Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, taking over from Bishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira. 

Banja Moses was enthroned on Sunday, December 10, 2023, during a service held at St Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe. The service was led by Bishop Henry Katumba and attended by quite a number of dignitaries, amongst them being Buganda Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga and Queen Sylvia Nagginda.

The House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda sitting at St Stephen’s Cathedral Naluwerere in East Busoga Diocese elected Banja as the new Bishop of Namirembe Diocese on November 20, 2023. Banja and his wife Rev. Canon Prof. Olivia Nassaka Banja committed themselves to continue with the good work done by the predecessors. The couple is blessed with three children. Banja has been serving as the Archdeacon of Luzira Archdeaconry in Namirembe Diocese.

The new Bishop of Namirembe Diocese holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity from Makerere University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the same institution. Former Bishops of Namirembe as history writes., The position was first held by Leslie Brown, who handed it over to Dunstan Nsubuga in November 1965. In 1985, Misaeri Kauma became the third Bishop of Namirembe Diocese and served until 1994.

The position was then held by Samuel Ssekkadde (1994 to 2009), who handed over to Bishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira on May 31, 2009. Luwalira handed over to the latest, Bishop Banja Moses today, December 10, 2023.
